Sandra Holmes

I am largely self taught, I took up mosaics in 2013 as a distraction from cancer treatment. I wanted to leave something beautiful and lasting behind from my broken pieces. Initially starting in tiles I eventually moved to glass for its colour range and clean lines. Often experimenting in techniques and styles, mosaics has become my therapy and it seems I need a lot. I simply make things I love for the joy of creating. Something about the process of cut and colour drowns out all the background noise.

I gained multiple national awards at my first mosaic exhibition entry in 2015, including Best 3D, Best new entrant, and Overall Exhibition Winner. I went on to co-curate the 2016 National Mosaic Exhibition and symposium for 200 artists (at Estuary Art Centre). Since then I've raised $32000 for breast cancer research through co-ordination of mosaic torsos as a fundraiser from artists contributions on mesh. The last few years I have been simply content in my shed creating for pleasure.

Sailors Kiss and Serenity are simply me wanting to make something beautiful and experimenting with different layers and textures in an effort to challenge myself.
